Memorial Day events announced in Metro Detroit, Michigan

May is National Military Appreciation Month, an opportunity to recognize and show appreciation for America’s armed forces. Several events are held throughout the month, culminating with Memorial Day on May 30, a day commemorating all who have died in military service for the United States.

Most Detroit-area churches have a plan for remembering those who gave their lives in the service of this nation.

Here are some of the planned public events.

Birmingham Remembrance Day 2022

The City of Birmingham will hold its annual Memorial Day Service on Monday 30th May 2022 at 10:00am in Shain Park adjacent to City Hall, 151 Martin St. The patriotic program will include addresses of historical interest, popular songs, wreath laying at the memorials and live music by the Birmingham Concert Band Entertainers featuring singer Patty Ward. Civil War reenactors will assist with the service.

In addition, the Friends of the Birmingham Museum will mark the occasion with a special presentation. At 11:30 am they will conduct a guided tour of historic Greenwood Cemetery with a focus on local heroes who served our country. Family participation is welcome and veteran participation is encouraged.

Beverly Hills Memorial Day 2022

After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Memorial Day Parade and Mardi Gras returns to Beverly Hills.

The parade begins Monday, May 30 at 11:00 am at Groves High School. The parade goes up Evergreen and east on Beverly Road, ending at Beverly Park. The carnival begins in Beverly Park after the parade ends. Take part in games, live entertainment, face painting, a petting zoo and food trucks at the carnival. The carnival is fun for all ages.

The Memorial Day Ceremony is held around the flagpole in Beverly Park to honor all those who lost their lives serving in the military.

The Beverly Hills Lions Club hosts its annual Villagewide Fun Run/Walk on Memorial Day at 9:00 am. The run/walk begins at Beverly Elementary School. The Lions Club conducts this event to raise funds to support programs for the blind and hard of hearing and charities in Beverly Hills. Walk-up registration will be accepted between 8:15am and 8:25am on the day of the event. Complimentary t-shirts will be provided to all registered attendees.

Livonia Memorial Day 2022

Two days before Memorial Day, attend the Livonia Memorial Day Ceremony on Saturday, May 28 at 9:00 a.m. at Veterans Park Memorial Plaza (Northeast corner of Five Mile/Farmington Roads) to honor the veterans who are no longer with us. The program will be led by Master of Ceremonies Pastor Kellie Whitlock of Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church; Music by 338th Army Band Brass Quintet and Livonia Civic Chorus conducted by Jeff Swan with accompanist Kimberly Swan; and Memorial Day address to be given by Ret. LCDR Patti Mitrowski, US Coast Guard.

Milford Remembrance Day 2022

The Milford Memorial Day parade marches through downtown Milford, beginning at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall on Commerce Street, then heading south on Main Street to Central Park, where a ceremony will follow around noon.

Weather permitting, a Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) helicopter will be flown by the Yankee Air Museum offers short rides for a fee that are available on a first come, first served basis at the Carls Family YMCA on Commerce Street, just west of downtown.

Commemoration Day South Lyon 2022

Organized by the South Lyon Very Fine Post 1224, the Memorial Day Parade is a tradition in South Lyon. The parade will depart from Bartlett Elementary at 9:00 am and make its way east on Lake Street/10 Mile through downtown to Reynolds Sweet Parkway. The parade ends at the South Lyon Cemetery with a touching ceremony commemorating the contributions and sacrifices of all veterans.

Novi Remembrance Day 2022

Novis Memorial Day events begin almost a week before May 30th with a Prince’s Field of Honor on Wednesday May 25th with veterans as special guests that evening. The program includes a concert from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the Detroit Retro Society. Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. with veterans and one guest invited to dine under the big tent. Pre-register by calling 248-347-0400. Free hot dogs will be available to the general public.

The concert will be followed by a memorial ceremony at 7:00 p.m. Both living and deceased veterans are honored with a fitting tribute, with VFW Post 1519 parading the colors, laying a wreath, playing the roosters and delivering the 21-gun salute. The Field of Honor Trail begins at 7:30 a.m. when flag bearers march to the Field of Honor Trail and encourage the community to join the walk. The trail is open for the community to walk through Memorial Day.

There are many Memorial Day events in Novi, to, Starting with the Memorial Day 5K race at 8am and the 1 mile fun run. This year, a portion of each registration will be donated to the Novi Parks Foundation’s Jessica’s Splashpad Fund. Jessica was a beloved Fox 2 meteorologist, wife, mother and daughter. Jessica Starr-Rose was a Fox 2 meteorologist who committed suicide in late 2018. Her family and the Novi Parks Foundation are working together to raise money to create a splashpad in her honor. Memorial Day Run will also contribute $5 for every additional donation over $5.

The Novi Parade has a new route this year. At 10am the parade begins at Meadowbrook Commons, 25075 Meadowbrook Road. She then heads south on Meadowbrook, turns right onto Ten Mile Road and heads west on Ten Mile Road until it terminates at the northeast entrance of the Civic Center, 45175 Ten Mile Road.

Northville Memorial Day 2022

Northville’s VFW Post 4012 will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at Rural Hill Cemetery, 215 West Seven Mile Road to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Hosted by VFW Post 4012 from Northville.

Plymouth Memorial Day 2022

The Plymouth Tradition begins at 9am at the Plymouth Cultural Center. A ceremony will follow at 9:30 am in Veteran Park (main building and church). The Veterans Parade winds his way through the city’s neighborhoods, running around 10-11am and meandering counter-clockwise through the city, with the north-west quadrant being near Junction, Leicester and Lexington streets before heading south along Blunk and then Evergreen . The precession heads east utilizing Rose, Harvey, Win, Harding and Hartsough before returning north along Mill and Holbrook. It ends at the cultural center.

Wayne Westland Memorial Day 2022

The Wayne Westland event is one of the few that takes place before the actual holiday. The parade will take place on Sunday 29th May at 1pm. It begins at John Glenn High School, heads west on Marquette, then north on Carlson to the Westland Public Library. It ends at the Veterans Memorial Garden.

A small ceremony takes place in the garden at the end of the parade to commemorate the fallen men and women who made the greatest sacrifice for our nation.

Farmington Memorial Day 2022

The Farmington Memorial Day parade will take place on Monday, May 30th at 10am. American Legion Post 346 and the Xemplar Club are teaming up to host the event, which gives people a chance to honor local service members.

The parade route begins near the intersection of Orchard Lake Road and Grand River Avenue and heads west down the Grand River for a mile. It ends at the Farmington War Memorial in Memorial Park and concludes with a ceremony. A free community dinner will follow.

Canton Day of Remembrance 2022

The honor guard of the canton fire brigade will hold a memorial service on Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the Veteran’s Memorial

Center in Heritage Park, behind Canton Administration Building, 1150 S. Canton Center Road.

Representatives from the United States Marine Corps will be present for a wreath-laying ceremony at the 1st Battalion 24th Marine Division Memorial. A roll call will also be held for the “Fallen 22” Marines who were deployed to duty in Iraq in 2006-07 and made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Marine Corps Honor Guard will unveil the “Corporal Hoffman Bench” in honor of Corporal Josh Hoffman. Corporal Hoffman was wounded in Iraq while serving with 1/24 Marines and recently succumbed to his injuries.
